3D Modelling & Animation

Plastic Fantastic

I have heard before about how accessible 3D Printers can be to the unwashed masses. But being time poor (not to mention cash poor) meant that it still felt prohibitive.

Stumbling across Shapeways reignited the old excitement for 3D modelling. The unit prices seem expensive at first (especially given the recent plunge in the AUD) but when viewed from a rapid prototyping perspective it makes great sense. I can’t see the user-driven stores or novelty products being madly popular (or even sustainable).

But as someone with a slight penchant for action figures, it brings wonderful possibilities to the table with regards to customization.

Fabber

Someone recently alerted me to the existence of this device. Although cheaper and more within reach to the everyman than it’s industrial-scale alternatives, the total price of materials being US$2500 still makes the thought of building one of these prohibitive. Not to mention the time and skill involved in putting it together when the time in progress on my M.A.M.E. cabinet stands at over 3 years and ticking.

Still. This may be the closest we will ever get to a replicator.
